Our Story

At midnight, on March 25, 2020, a 21-day lockdown was imposed in India, effectively immobilizing 1.3 billion of its citizens – the world’s largest lockdown at the time. In India, where a majority of the people are daily wage workers or run small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) that form the backbone of the country’s informal economy, a lockdown threatened the survival of the most vulnerable section of the population. In an effort to support them, we launched an initiative to alleviate the emerging hunger crisis on the 1st day of the lockdown.

The strategy was to catalyze a bottom-up grassroots movement, starting with people acting within their communities and replicating it across various towns and cities. Within 8 days, we were able to raise more than 44K CHF, and by day 6, we were able to supply food and sanitary kits to more than 800 people across Delhi, Chandigarh, Kerala, and Chennai. Buoyed by our impact, we decided to develop this project into something more inspiring and long-term and work on education, livelihood and environmental causes to support vulnerable communities. Humane Warriors was born.

We are now a tax-exempt charity, registered in Switzerland with more than 153 warriors from all parts of the world striving to create a difference by working with underrepresented communities across the world.

The Legend of the

Hummingbird

Legend says, there was once a fire in the forest. While all the animals stood transfixed with fear and helplessness as the forest burnt, there was one hummingbird who set out to do what it could. It flew to the nearest stream, filled its beak with water, and put it into the fire. As it continued, the other animals who stood watching told the hummingbird that it was too small to make a difference, to which it replied

“I’m doing the best I can.”

Deeply inspired by the hummingbird, we, at Humane Warriors, believe that each one of us can create impactful change.

Our Roadmap

Heya everyone! I’m Amal. I am a PhD candidate at the Technical University of Eindhoven in the Netherlands. Since I started working, I was donating 2% of my salary (after subtracting the essential costs) every month to a charity, usually focused on the upliftment of girls and women. When I found out about humane warriors, I was keen to volunteer because I finally felt that I could actually do something tangible rather than just donating money. It has been a challenging and great experience so far. I never thought that volunteering from another continent could have such an impact on the lives of people living in a completely different continent. I am looking forward to diving in to more projects at HW and working with the team!
