Humane Warriors is dedicated to helping people affected by natural calamities. Assam being located on the banks of the Brahmaputra river is prone to monsoon floods. In 2020 when the monsoon floods affected Assam, people, crops and wildlife were all left without shelter and a hopeful hand to hold. It was time to step up and bring relief to the affected families in the Jorhat district of Assam. We partnered with the North East Cell of IIT Bombay, a student organization trying to provide platforms for different sociocultural activities, academic seminars and other creative expressions to the people of Northeast India.
In 2020, when the world was too caught up dealing with the raging COVID-19 pandemic, Assam was flooding. Monsoon floods in Assam are caused due to failure of embankments to gauge the natural course of the river. These floods affected rural families in the district of Jorhat, mostly small-scale farmers and seasonal casual laborers. With a difficult harvest season ahead of them, these families were now suffering from broken homes and a lack of basic resources paired with the loss of loved ones and a pressing uncertainty of the future.
With the help of the North East Cell (NEC) – IIT Bombay (NEC), in partnership with North East Affected Area Development Society, Jorhat and state partner ActionAid India, we were set to take action in the affected areas and adequate them to deal with such calamities.
The relief campaign was carried out in the affected villages of Jhanjimukh, Jorhat and Toptopi. It was decided that hygiene kits were to be provided. We had a budget of ₹1,00,230 (excluding the miscellaneous costs). After analyzing the funds and resources available, a plan was laid out and an estimated 257 households were to receive hygiene kits at the earliest date possible.
All hands were on deck and 257 families received relief kits containing essential items (Mosquito repellant, bathing soap bar, detergent bar, sanitary pads, phenyl, bleaching powder and torchlight) arranged from the local vendors of Assam. A local permit was obtained from the district authorities, and kits were delivered by road and water to all decided villages within a week.
