During the first wave of COVID-19, India’s prolonged 50+ days lockdown had a devastating impact, not only stripping the majority of the informal workforce of their daily income, but also leaving many low-income families with depleted savings. In this critical time, our Fight Hunger, Fight Corona project emerged as a beacon of compassion, providing over 160,000 daily meals and essential ration kits to those in desperate need.
Some of the major problematic amendments:
The draft EIA Notification legitimizes post-facto clearances, allowing projects to receive approvals after they have already commenced or been completed. Public consultation requirements have been waived for certain project areas, and projects labeled as “strategic” are exempt from EIA regulations. Compliance reports are now required annually instead of semi-annually, and the delegation of monitoring powers to government institutions lacks clarity. Moreover, the time frame for public consultations has been reduced from 30 days to 20 days without justification.
Human Warriors, through this petition, requests the Ministry of Environment of India to withdraw the EIA 2020 draft because it does not enable environment protection, but rather serves only as an environment clearance process. It also waives public consultation for major projects, which would threaten the local communities and ecology. Together, we stand united in our commitment to protect the environment and advocate for sustainable practices.
