Hamara Bank, an initiative by Humane Warriors, is a microcredit project aimed at uplifting the members of Choti Si Aasha, a handicrafts collective. This project focuses on creating and enhancing livelihood opportunities, both during and after the lockdown in India. With Humane Warrior’s continuous support, Hamara Bank has facilitated 21 loans to community members and their families. These loans serve various purposes, such as acquiring sewing machines to increase productivity at home, paying children’s school fees, rebuilding houses, and purchasing autorickshaws, among others. With an impressive repayment rate of over 95%, the funds have been reinvested within the community to provide additional loans and further empower its members.
The functioning of this Self Help Group is driven by the community’s own funding and administration. The women within the community make crucial decisions regarding micro-loans, repayment terms, and compliance management. Chhoti Si Asha provides guidance and supervision to the SHG, ensuring smooth implementation and overall program management. The onset of the 2019 lockdown had a profound impact on the regular operations of Chhoti Si Asha. The sales of CSA’s handicraft products experienced a significant decline, leading to reduced orders. Consequently, many women faced extended periods of unemployment due to limited opportunities for participation in handicraft production.
During the initial phase, Humane Warriors extended support to CSA by providing funding for essential food supplies and ration packets to the community.
During the subsequent phase, our organization provided support to the Hamara Bank initiative, enabling an increase in the number of loans disbursed. This endeavor aimed to promote financial stability and facilitate the potential for rebuilding livelihoods among community members.
Chhoti Si Asha (www.chhotisiasha.org) is a registered non-profit organization that has been empowering communities since 2009. Based in Chandigarh, India, we work with women from Janta Colony and Khudda Lahora villages, providing livelihood, leadership, and learning opportunities. Our goal is to be a beacon of hope, helping these communities build essential skills for a brighter future.
