IVRS BASED GIRL’S
EDUCATION PROGRAM

Bridging

The Digital Divide

In collaboration with
SwaTaleem | Colored Cow | AAM Digital

Project Summary

Through our collaborative project with SwaTaleem, an organization based in Haryana, we empower historically marginalized girls aged 10 to 18 by providing them with distance education using low-resource technologies. Utilizing an Interactive Voice Response System (IVRS), similar to customer service helplines, the girls can actively engage with learning material. We are also establishing automated monitoring and evaluation for the program that’ll help us track their progress over time.

TheNeed

Addressing the issue of access to school education goes beyond implementing short-term solutions; it requires building a sustainable ecosystem that provides structural support for girls. This entails bringing together all stakeholders, including teachers, school leadership, and parents, who hold the power to make impactful decisions

Addressing Needs

We are dedicated to providing underrepresented adolescent girls with quality education, focusing on English language proficiency and socioemotional skills. Our impactful approach combines grassroots efforts with an innovative, low-cost technology known as the Interactive Voice Response System (IVRS). This unique hybrid model maximizes our reach and engagement, creating a powerful educational experience for these girls.

TakingAction

In our relentless pursuit of progress, we are continually enhancing the Interactive Voice Response System (IVRS) to deliver educational content through captivating pre-recorded audio messages. These messages are skillfully crafted and aligned with the six key areas of the curriculum, presented in the form of contextual stories. To streamline operations and ensure effective monitoring and evaluation of the program, we are developing cutting-edge automation software, interactive dashboards, and customized case management systems tailored to SwaTaleem’s unique needs. Furthermore, as SwaTaleem’s hybrid program expands throughout Haryana, we stand by their side, supporting their digital transformation efforts. Currently, our IVRS program reaches 603 girls and their parents across five schools. Our ambitious goal is to reach nearly 5,000 girls enrolled in all 25 KGBV Schools in Haryana by the end of this year. The IVRS system also serves as a powerful tool to engage the parents, involving them in facilitating their daughters’ learning journey. Together, we are making an indelible impact on the lives of these girls and their families.

How Will Your Donations Be Used?

Digital Support

In the first phase, we aim to fund 200 phones for girls (20% of total girls in schools). This will amount to a maximum of 10 lakhs INR. In the second phase, we want to expand to further schools and would need to raise funds for around 1000 phones.

IVRS Development & Technical Support

Our aim is to develop an agile and intelligent low-cost system which uses both smartphone and interactive voice response system (IVRS) assisted technology to bring together girl students, parents and teachers. This unifying digital ecosystem aims to do three things:

1. Engage parents with their daughters’ education using IVRS, parents get regular updates about their daughter’s schooling progress and well-being)

2. Connect parents and teachers through virtual school management committees

3. Connect schools to form a national network committed to empowering girls via internet-assisted platforms to discuss school policies, training on life skills and digital literacy

Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya or KGBVs are residential schools specifically designed to provide education to minority girls in India. They are throughout the country in what is known as Educational Backward Blocks. Educationally Backward Blocks were identified throughout the country as areas with literacy levels below and male-female literacy gaps above the national average. There are 3,609 residential KGBVs in India where, along with education, girls are provided clothing, food, and school materials (NITI Aayog, 2015).
